    STRUCTURE FIRE IN THE 1300
    BLOCK OF BEACHMONT STREET

    By: Jack Hansen, Battalion Chief
    Incident Date: 01/30/12
    Posted: 01/30/12

On the above date and time, Ventura City firefighters responded to a reported structure fire on Beachmont Avenue in the Ventura Keys neighborhood. Firefighters arrived to find an attached three-car garage fully engulfed in flames.

An aggressive attack was launched on the fire while other teams of firefighters insured that the flames did not extend into the living space of the two-story residence. Additional firefighters were requested to the scene, including crews from Oxnard City and Ventura County Fire departments. One resident was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and released.

Due to a well-coordinated and swift response to this fire, the flames were kept from entering the residence and damaging additional personal property. Damage is estimated at $150K to the garage, $60K to the vehicles, and $50K to the contents. Cause of this fire is still under investigation. It is important to note that the properly constructed firewall between the garage and the residence limited damage to the interior.

Ventura City Fire Department investigators determined the cause of this fire was caused from a boat battery charging operation on a work-bench in the garage.

    FATAL TRAFFIC COLLISION - UPDATE

By: Sgt. Ryan Weeks, VPD-TRAFFIC UNIT
    Incident Date: 12/30/11
    Update Posted: 01/31/12

    UPDATED WITH BLOOD ALCOHOL
    CONTENT & CAUSE OF COLLISION

The Ventura Police Department has learned through the Ventura County Medical Examiner's office that the toxicology results from the decedent, Julia Rivas, showed that she had a blood alcohol content of .19% at the time of her death. With this new information, the official cause of the collision will be listed as Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.

The Ventura Police Department investigated six (6_ fatal traffic collisions in 2011. In three of those fatal traffic collisions, DUI was the cause of the collision. In a fourth collision, the pedestrian who was struck and killed had an extremely high blood alcohol content. Therefore, four of the six fatal traffic collisions in 2011 involved alcohol.

Additionally, the six fatal traffic collisions from 2011 is a 100% increase from the amount of fatal collisions investigated in 2010 by the Ventura Police Department. In 2010 there were three fatal collisions with none of them involving alcohol or drugs. In 2009 there were four fatal traffic collisions with none of them involving alcohol or drugs.

In an effort to help combat drunk driving, the Ventura Police Department regularly conducts DUI checkpoints as well as DUI saturation patrols with funds provided in a grant through the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On 12/30/11, at about 9:39 a.m., the Ventura Police Command Center received a 9-1-1 call regarding an injury traffic collision on Harbor Boulevard west of San Pedro Street in the City of Ventura. Multiple Ventura Police patrol officers responded to the scene along with Ventura Police Traffic Investigators and Ventura City Firefighters. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found one of the involved parties, Rivas, trapped in her Volvo sedan and unresponsive. Ventura Firefighters immediately checked on Rivas and determined that she was deceased. The driver of the other vehicle, Northrop, sustained minor injuries.

Ventura Police Traffic Investigators began an investigation into the cause of the collision. After a preliminary investigation, it appears that Rivas was alone in her vehicle and driving eastbound on Harbor Boulevard between Vista Del Mar Drive and San Pedro Street. Rivas' vehicle, for unknown reasons, veered off of the roadway and onto the right side dirt shoulder. Rivas' vehicle traveled in the dirt shoulder for a significant distance before re-entering the roadway. The vehicle then overcorrected and entered into the westbound lane of Harbor Boulevard.

The other party, Northrop, was driving her full size Chevrolet pickup westbound on Harbor Boulevard when she saw Rivas losing control of her vehicle on the dirt shoulder. Northrop came to a stop in the westbound lane due to the fact that she believed Rivas was out of control. Rivas' vehicle then collided with Northrop's stopped vehicle. Rivas' vehicle was turned sideways with the driver's side of the vehicle facing Northrop's vehicle when the contact occurred. This, in turn, crushed the driver's side of the vehicle, trapping Rivas inside.

It does appear that all involved parties were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the collision. It was unknown at this time what caused Rivas' vehicle to veer off of the roadway and onto the dirt shoulder.

Ventura Police Department Traffic Investigators are continuing their investigation of this collision. Some witnesses to the collision were identified at the scene. If there are any other witnesses to the collision they are urged to contact the Ventura Police Department Traffic Unit, at (805) 339-4309.

    MULTIPLE ARMED ROBBERY ARRESTS

    By: Sgt. Jerry Foreman, VPD
    Incident Dates: 12/3011, 01/09/12, 01/20/12
    Posted:01/31/12

Over the last three weeks, the City of Ventura experienced several violent armed robberies that all appeared to be related. As a result of their investigation, the Ventura Police Department believes they have arrested the suspects responsible for all three robberies.

The first armed robbery occurred on 12/30/11 at Munoz Wireless Communications located at 9278 Telephone Road. During this robbery the lone suspect entered the store with a bandana covering his face. He walked around the counter and immediately pistol-whipped the clerk over the head with a handgun and demanded money. When the clerk didn't respond, the suspect hit the clerk several more times, then fled the store without money or merchandise and ran to an awaiting vehicle parked behind the store.

The clerk sustained minor injuries as a result of this robbery but did not require medical attention.

During the second robbery that occurred on 1/9/12 at Hungry Howies Pizza, 1087 Scandia, the suspect entered the restaurant and simulated having a gun under his jacket. He demanded money from the clerk, who gave him an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect left the store with the money and without hurting anyone.

The third robbery happened in the Pierpont area near Marina Park on 01/20/12. During this robbery, two suspects approached a man walking a dog. One of the suspects demanded money from him, while the other pointed a handgun inches from his face. The victim turned over an undisclosed amount of money. Then without provocation, the suspect with the gun pistol-whipped the victim. Both suspects fled the scene in a pickup truck.

The victim sustained minor injuries but did not require medical attention.

On 01/21/12 at about 0930 hours, the Ventura Police Command Center received 9-1-1 calls regarding a possible domestic dispute at a specific room at The Shores Motel. When officers arrived on scene, they contacted a suspect leaving the described room. This subject was identified as Spencer Irish, a 21-year-old parolee from Ventura. Officers searched Irish and found him in possession of a concealed dagger and ammunition, both felonies. They arrested him without incident.

While still on scene of this domestic call, officers noticed a pickup trucked parked in The Shores parking lot that closely matched the description of the getaway truck from the Marina Park robbery the previous night. The truck was registered to Spencer Irish.

Officers searched Irish's vehicle pursuant to his parole terms and found four handguns, two replica handguns, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Officers also located other evidence indicating Irish was involved in all three robberies.

In addition, officers were able to develop information and ultimately identify the second robbery suspect from the Marina Park robbery. This suspect was identified as Brent Theriault, a 20-year-old probationer from Ventura.

On 01/22/12, officers learned the possible whereabouts of the second suspect. They went to a residence in the 1800 block of Sunridge Drive and were able to take him into custody without incident.
Later in the evening of 01/22/12, officers responded to the 8000 block of Denver Street regarding a residential burglary. During their burglary investigation, officers learned that several guns were taken, some matching the description of the ones used in the robberies. Officers believe the guns taken during this burglary were used in at least one the robberies.

Irish was booked at Ventura County Jail for three counts of Armed Robbery, two counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon, two counts of Commercial Burglary, Felon in Possession of Firearms, Mace, a Stun Gun and Ammunition.

Theriault was booked at Ventura County Jail for one count of Armed Robbery, and one count of Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
