DUST STORM HIT CHANNEL ISLAND AREA - WINDS ALONG THE COAST

By Staff
3:00 p.m. 02/13/12

Normally, we do not do weather reporting. However, I tried to drive over to Ventura from the Channel Islands area a little after 2 p.m. today, 02/13/12. At approximately Wooley & Victoria by Seabridge Shopping Center, I drove into a dust storm but not before traffic problems with city personnel picking up palm street fronds scattered in the north lane of Victoria. Should have taken photos.

Stopped for gas; however, didn't get out of the car because the dust was so thick. There were others braving the storm and gassing their vehicles. - J. B. Robinson

Gusty winds reported in Ventura with approximately 35 MPH plus.
  • Tonight: Clear. Windy this evening. Low 43F. WNW winds at 25 to 35 mph, diminishing to 10 to 20 mph.
  • Tomorrow: A mainly sunny sky. High 62F. Winds WNW at 10 to 15 mph.
  • Tomorrow night: Clear skies. Low 41F. Winds light and variable.
  • Wednesday: Partly cloudy skies. Slight chance of a rain shower. High 61F. Winds W at 5 to 10 mph.

DUI/DRIVERS LICENSE CHECKPOINT
UPDATED RESULTS - VENTURA

By Sergeant Ryan Weeks
Posted: 01-31-12

The Ventura Police Department held checkpoints at two different locations throughout the evening on 01/28/12. The first checkpoint was held on Ventura Avenue north of Main St. and the second checkpoint was held on Thompson Blvd. west of California Street. As a result of the checkpoints, the following enforcement was taken:
  • (2) DUI arrests. One was a .16 BAC, the other was unknown
  • (2) Citations issued for driving with a suspended drivers license
  • (4) Citations issued for driving with no driver's license
  • (3) Vehicles were impounded
  • (1) Driver cited for having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle
  • (7) Citations issued for other miscellaneous violations.
During the first checkpoint on Ventura Avenue, a motorist drove into the checkpoint and then backed unsafely out of the checkpoint. VPD motor officers attempted to stop the vehicle after it committed the violation, however the vehicle fled from the officers. After driving a short distance, the suspect vehicle crashed into some bushes and the driver fled the vehicle on foot. Responding officers were unable to locate the suspect.

Ventura, CA - The Ventura Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. DUI checkpoints are a proven enforcement tool effective in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol-involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough.

Officers will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. Officers will also check for proper licensing and will strive to delay motorists only momentarily. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000.

"Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed 3 lives and resulted in 55 injury crashes harming 82 of our friends and neighbors," said Sgt. Ryan Weeks of the Ventura Police Department Traffic Unit.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

"Deaths from drunk and drug-impaired driving are going down in California," said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). "But that still means that hundreds of our friends, family and co-workers are killed each year, along with tens of thousands who are seriously injured. We must all continue to work together to bring an end to these tragedies. If you see a Drunk Driver - Call 9-1-1."

Funding for this checkpoint is provided to The Ventura Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, targeting those who still don't heed the message to designate a sober driver.
