Chiropractic care is an often misunderstood health care approach. It may seen frightening to those who have never experienced it themselves and are just leaving it to their own imaginations. Others are frightened away by "horror stories" of others who may have had a bad experience. In reality, chiropractic care is neither frightening or scary, but can actually be a rather enjoyable and relaxing experience.
Chiropractic care is the health care system and profession that is based on manipulation of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine, to prevent and treat mechanical disorders. However, it is not just about treating back and neck pain in a non-invasive, non-medicinal way. It is, also, to keep focus on the life changes it can make in the health of a person and their spine. It takes very minimal actions to move the spine out of alignment; a car accident at 5 mph can cause a whiplash injury and most children by the age of 2 have fallen from the height of a changing table! A chiropractors job is to help keep your spine in it's best working condition. It can be used for crisis care, but for the most part, it is to keep you from being in poor health.
In speaking with Dr. Sharon MacDonald of Vitality Chiropractic Care in Ventura, she expressed to me that one of her main focuses as a chiropractor is to dispel the fears of chiropractic care. She expressed that everyone can benefit from chiropractic care and that there is a chiropractor for everyone. There are different levels of force used during a chiropractic adjustment and finding the balance of force you need is key to finding your perfect chiropractor.
Dr. MacDonald's other main focus is to make chiropractic care available to everyone; any age, any size. Dr. MacDonald is a chiropractor that has treated infants a few hours old to grown adults of larger than most proportions. Her passion to help children grow up healthy and strong and the realization that the birthing process is one of the most traumatic experiences for the spine. This is what led her to create a practice that is family friendly. Her own pregnancies are part of what led her to care for other pregnant women to help aid with the general discomforts of pregnancy. Some people may be nervous to think of chiropractic care for infants; however, in fact the process is so gentle for kids that most adjustments are done during a nap and the children rarely wake up during.
Dr. Sharon MacDonald uses a drop table to assist her during chiropractic adjustments. This table is set to the patients weight and with the aid of gravity along with focused contact provides the proper adjustment. She offers special pillows for her pregnant patients to aid in their comfort during an adjustment. Dr. MacDonald also uses cold laser and heat and cold therapy at her office to round out the care she offers. She also considers acupuncture, reiki, and massage therapy to be treatments that are well paired with chiropractic care. Dr. MacDonald also recommends a healthy diet, plenty of water, and exercise including weight bearing exercises as weight bearing exercises are directly related to the strength and density of our bones.

Beautiful Earth
By: Mary Campbell
As you may or may not know, beauty comes in all kinds of forms. If you've taken a look around you lately, there is plenty of beauty to be seen all over the place. Living in Ventura is sometimes like living in paradise. This month, I wanted to bring our attention to all the beauty around us and how we can maintain this beauty for future generations to come. I wanted to share with you what myself and my co-workers at Tangerenz are doing for our community for earth month and the rest of the year long.
This will be our 2nd year of making a larger effort for our community and beyond. We will again be working side-by-side this earth month with the Surfrider Foundation. Taken directly from their website, the Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world's oceans, waves and beaches. We will be sponsoring two beach clean-ups this year with their help at local Ventura beaches. Keeping our beaches clean helps preserve our community and the future of it as tourists have long flocked here to enjoy them. Tangerenz is also hosting a BINGO and comedy night with the help of the Ventura Comedy Club with all proceeds being donated to the Surfrider Foundation.
Most know that you have to recycle to keep our landfills less crowded and to reduce the use of unsustainable materials. However, not everyone knows that the plastic caps on water and soda bottles are non-recyclable like the rest of the bottle is. These caps often tend to end up as litter instead of making it into trash bins. As a result, the caps make their way to our waterways and oceans. Besides polluting our beaches and waterway, ocean birds often mistake these caps for something tasty and this always ends tragically.
On a positive note, a hair product company called AVEDA has created a way to turn these caps into the plastic packaging - packaging they use for their retail and professional products. Tangerenz salon has a receptacle for plastic caps if you would like to participate in this recycling program. You are
encouraged to get your local schools and children involved in this recycling process as well.
Tangerenz has also made efforts that are well known to reduce our carbon footprint. We have all energy efficient lighting and keep our water usage in check. We recycle all foils used in color services and even send hair that is swept off the floor to a company that makes products from it that aid in the cleanup of oil spills in waterways.
I urge you all to do whatever you can to help out our earth. Whether that means recycling more, changing out a few light bulbs, or buying post-consumer recycled materials. Every little thing can help. I personally am going to try to walk more and use my car less. I also plan to pick up litter along my walks, it only takes a second and just think of how every little bit helps.
For more information on how you can participate with Tangerenz and Surfrider for earth month, contact Mary @ Tangerenz (805) 648-5564 or maryda@hotmail.com. More information on the bottlecap-recycling program can be found at: www.aveda.com/caps
