Artist's Statement
As a child, I remember being told that there wasn't an artistic bone in my body. I never dreamed of becoming an artist. Instead, I channeled that creative energy into reading and became an avid student of mythology and storytelling. Often I would travel to New York to spend hours at the museums viewing works by Magritte, Rauschenberg, and Cornell. Later while living in Atlanta, I became fascinated by the work of self-taught outsider artists who worked with found objects and recycled materials. These influences all came into play when I began working in assemblage.
My work is about the process of assembling objects to tell a story; a visual metaphor. It may begin with an object, such as an old shoe or a piece of rusted metal. Or it may be a photograph, fragment of poetry, or remembered myth that starts the ideas flowing. The working process is intuitive. As I work, I sift through collections of objects, selecting and combining them with paint and images often working quickly on three or four pieces at the same time. Objects come from secondhand stores, garage sales, local beaches, junkyards, and roadsides. When gathering these objects I respond to shape, texture, design, and material.
The materials beckon me long before its known how they will be used. It may take months, even years, before collected debris and found objects find their way into a piece. Mirror, colored glass, and resin are often used to both reflect and obscure details. The viewer is invited to seek out the hidden layers within the piece; to look into the glass and around the corner; to see a bit of themselves reflected in the mirror.
ARTIST JEANNE LAROCCO's BIO
A native of New York, Ms. LaRocco has lived in California for over a decade, exhibited art since 2005, and became an artist-in-residence at Sea Breeze in 2006. This exhibit will be her first featured showcase in any venue. She was among the 2007/2008 recipients of Emerging Artist Fellowship from the City of Ventura. With her assemblages, Ms. LaRocco melds often very disparate objects, images, and applied surfaces in so trans formative a way, as to convince viewers that all these things manifested naturally in their resulting configuration. Her slight of hand, in terms of clever juxtapositions, is balanced with an often-tender sense of poignancy, underlying her work.
This self-taught artist made her first assemblage, a box construction, in 1995 as a gift for a friend. She continued to make box 'shrines' for friends and family until taking her first art class through Santa Barbara City College, followed by course work at Ventura College. Since 2004, Jeanne has been showing her work in juried shows throughout Ventura County. Jeanne has been a member of the San Buenaventura Artists Union since 2006 and keeps a studio space at Sea Breeze Studios.
ABOUT AMY SCHNEIDER - Guest Artist
Ms. Schneider received her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art where she was awarded an Art School Associates Award. A graphic designer and visual artist, she finds the interplay between the two an exciting mix. In anticipation of a workshop she consistently teaches at Vita Art Center, two adult artists were each heard separately to say, "I want to be just like Amy when I grow up! "www.amyschneiderstudio.com
