"Instructor's Bios"

Julie Merrill is the third generation of her family to call Ventura her home. Even though she has traveled throughout the world, Merrill still considers Ventura the absolute best place to live.

After growing up in Ventura she moved to Hawaii and then to Sonoma County where she married and had her two children. While living in Sonoma County she graduated from Sonoma State University, working mainly in color and design. In 1986 she returned to Ventura and worked at Patagonia as the colorist, and print director, where she was able to enjoy her interest in art and color. During this time Julie enjoyed several years of watercolor classes with Cathy Quiel, a Santa Barbara artist. Cathy Quiel's classes have been most influential in Julie's painting.

Julie now lives at the beach in Ventura, teaches watercolor classes at Sea Breeze Art Studios, travels and paints as much as possible. "Teaching watercolor", Julie says, "is just about the most fun thing she has done. It is inspiring to watch total beginner students discover their creative side and get lost in their painting. Doing art helps to see things in a different way adding value and dimension to life."

She feels very lucky to be living in Ventura surrounded by so much inspiration - the hills, the beach and other amazing artists that live here too.

ARTISTS UNION GALLERY PRESENTS CONCERT
Kaiborg With Jeff Kaiser &
David Borgo Performance

This event is a KaiBorg CD release concert that, also, includes performer Kris Tiner with a film by Allen Glass.

The performance strategies of KaiBorg encompass the exploratory domains of real-time computer processing and experimental improvisation. The scope of their musical vocabulary creates an intricate web of references and a compelling ensemble voice. KaiBorg employs real-time interactive strategies from jazz and improvised music within the expanded sonic palette and space made possible by the use of live electronics.

The goal is to create hybrid instruments with which we have the same intimate feedback relationship as our traditional acoustic ones. We eschew pre-recorded samples and pre-composed material so that all of the sonic events and forms originate in performance. However, the performers do not shun in their relationship to the rich tradition of jazz and African American creative music making. In the performances, their aim is to sonically foreground the cybernetic processes of feedback, interconnection, communication and emergence.

KaiBorg has performed at the following: STEIM (Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music) in Amsterdam, University of Göteborg, the Brötznow Club in Sweden, NWEAMO (Northwest Electro-Acoustic Music Organization) in San Diego, UC Institute for Research in the Arts, "State of the Art" Festival in Riverside, 2008 International Society for Improvised Music in the Lamont School of Music, University of Denver, Colorado, Palomar College Concert Series, INCUBATOR at UCSD and for the three nights of concerts celebrating the opening of the Conrad Prebys Music Center at UCSD.
