SANTA ANA WINDSTORMS DEVASTATE
PACADENA, SAN GALBRIEL VALLEY
TOWNS & SOME HOLLYWOOD MANSIONS

The beauty of the recent windstorms that hit Southern California is that it is reported that there were no death and zero to few people injured resulting from the damage - just a lot of people inconvenienced.

However, as the way the Santa Ana winds blow from the West to the East, people in the San Gabriela Valley including Pasadena, Temple City and other surrounding Los Angeles County towns continue through this first week in December to clear downed trees that toppled over onto power lines, into streets and yards of homeowners, cars and other vehicles, plus houses that left some homeless.

Approximately a quarter of a million homes including families went without electricity with non to creative ways of cooking, keeping warm through chilly nights, no gas pumps, no electronic gargets and those without landlines and no means of recharging cell phone batteries, no phone service.

Meantime, electrical company crews worked round the clock to deal with dangerous downed power lines. As the math goes, on the average of two people to a home, that's half a million people without power. If the average household has four to a home, a million people went without power. That's huge. Of course, not nearly as huge as recently power and damage problems that went on in the eastern states. Unsure why these power and telephone lines are not underground as in our neighborhood in Oregon had as early as 1973 as does my current neighborhood in Channel Harbor for what I understand 42 years.

Stores carrying generator, candles, dry ice and the like were filled with shoppers purchasing these items. On December 2nd, one store in Pasadena promising truckloads of the above needed items was reported to be staying open 24 hours a day and night for customers until electricity in the THEN remaining 1/8th of a million homes without power was restored.

According to local news stations, these mighty storms over the first days of December brought on forceful winds that in part reached 140 - 150 miles per hours leaving destruction in its wake. Closure became the scene with schools closed including some colleges, libraries and roads partially impassable,

With the price tag of the windstorms' damages to be in the millions, Assemblyman Mike Eng has called Governor Brown to request to declare a State of Emergency. Meantime, Edison was reported to open distribution centers for those still without power while South Pasadena offers displaced residents shelter at the senior center.

If your insurance policy did not blow away, insurance experts suggest that you look at your policy for your coverage. Of course, if you live in the areas struck by winds, you have nothing else to do but to look for your insurance policy especially without lights. They, of course, have forewarned that they will be watching to avoid insurance fraud.

According to the Pasadena Star, "Despite some continued challenges, Pasadena is returning to normal," City Manager Michael Beck.

On the first night of the storm, some Hollywood mansion owners faced destruction, too.

A topic that hovers over USA Americans jobs, however, with what appears little result in 2011 is the BUY AMERICAN - PUT AMERCANS back to work. An example of that topic is the one regarding "Big Boost For Chinese Steel".

Reported from Philly.com, "By creating jobs for Chinese steelworkers, today's politicians are making it all but certain that the U. S. steel industry will get even weaker. If it is an industry in which no one company today is capable of doing the work itself, then after another Bay Bridge or two, not even multiple U. S. companies will be able to tackle such undertakings. The blue-collar workers will be followed out the door by the with-collar professionals, the engineers and draftsmen, as is already happening…"

As reported by Rellis Smith in the October Edition of Town Biz 101 regarding work on the upgrade project on the San Francisco-Oakland Bridge, "the assembly work in California and the pouring of the concrete-road surface will be done by Americans. However, construction of the bridge decks and the materials that went into them are a MADE IN CHINA affair..."

Again, as reported by philly.com, "What is more troublesome is that the contrast between the actions of policymakers who originally built the Bay Bridge and today's politicians is that the construction started and ended during the Great Depression, providing desperately needed American jobs."

"China Construction Americm Inc. (CCA) built the Lake Marion High School and Technology Center in Orangebury County, S. C… The same Chinese company built a multipurpose convocation center at the University of South Carolina Aiken. The 100,000-square-foot facility with seating for 4,000 hosts campus and community affairs, from graduation ceremonies to basketball games, from dance marathons to freshman-orientation programs."

As the report goes on, the new modern train station at Yankee Stadium with its twin 10-car platforms,10,000-square-foot covered mezzanine and 450-foot overpass including elevators and stairs was built by CCA, too.

"Quoting Rellis Smith, "The only way we can expect to pull the United States out of the one of the worst economies in history is by getting rid of all Chinese contracts and stop importing and buying all Chinese goods. Buy USA made." Smith

CARJACKING-ROBBERY-VEHICLE PURSUIT
POSSESSION OF STOLEN PROPERTY

On 11/26/11 at 0725 hours, Ventura Police officers responded to a report of a carjacking that had occurred near the intersection of Seaward Avenue and the northbound 101Freeway off-ramp.

Investigating officers learned the victim had stopped his vehicle at the intersection when a pickup truck pulled alongside him. A male passenger exited the pickup and approached the driver's side of the victim vehicle. The suspect opened the driver's door and punched the victim before pulling him out of his car. The suspect drove away in the victim's vehicle leaving the victim behind. Officers search the area, however. were unable to locate the stolen vehicle at that time.

At approx 2020 hours, Ventura Police officers responded to a second incident report of a robbery and attempted carjacking in the Ventura City parking lot located on Seaward Avenue near Zephyr Street. It was learned the victim in this incident was seated in his vehicle when the suspect approached the passenger side and spoke to the victim through an open window.

During the course of the brief conversation the suspect told the victim he was going to take his vehicle then pepper sprayed the victim in the face. The victim was able to grab his vehicle keys and flee on foot. The suspect ran alongside the victim striking him repeatedly before fleeing the area. The victim returned to his vehicle and realized the suspect had taken items from the interior.

As the investigation progressed, officers learned the suspect had arrived in the vehicle stolen earlier during the carjacking. Additionally, it was believed that the suspect, Jesse Edwards, was still in possession of the original vehicle. Officers searched the surrounding area for the stolen vehicle with negative results.

At approx 2320 hours, a Ventura Police officer located the stolen vehicle parked near the intersection of Woodland Street and Hill Road. The patrol officer saw Edwards seated in the driver's seat and illuminated his emergency lights. Edwards quickly accelerated away with the officer in pursuit.

Additional, Ventura Police officers joined in the pursuit as Edwards turned onto Telegraph Road and traveled westbound continuing at a high rate of speed. Edwards drove left of the raised concrete median and into oncoming traffic several times while on Telegraph Road and the pursuit was terminated at that point due to the danger it posed to the public.

Officers followed Edwards and reinitiated the pursuit near Thompson Blvd. and Telegraph Road. Edwards continued west onto Thompson reaching speeds near 70 miles per hour. Edwards turned north onto Fir Street and eventually onto Poli Street where he entered downtown Ventura. The pursuit was again terminated prior to him entering the downtown area due to the heavily populated streets.

Edwards continued onto Ventura Avenue and officers again initiated the pursuit. As Edwards was leaving the city, Ventura Police officers successfully deployed a spike strip that flattened one of the tires on the stolen vehicle and drastically lowered the speed of the pursuit.

The pursuit continued north onto Highway 33 where the Ventura County Sheriff's officers took over. Ventura County Sheriff Officer (VCSO)deputies pursued Edwards into the City of Oak View and eventually onto Santa Ana road where Edwards turned back south towards Ventura. From Santa Ana Road, Edwards turned left onto Casitas Vista Road then onto southbound Highway 33 where a VCSO helicopter joined in the pursuit. Edwards continued south on Highway 33, as a Ventura Police officer deployed a second spike strip that deflated a second tire.

Edwards entered onto the southbound 101 Freeway from Highway 33 and the pursuit was taken over by the California Highway Patrol. The stolen vehicle lost the left front tire near the California Street overpass and Edwards was now driving on a rim as he neared the Seaward Avenue off-ramp. Edwards maneuvered his vehicle onto the off-ramp and exited onto Harbor Boulevard. Edwards drove through a red signal into the intersection of Harbor Blvd. and Monmouth Way where he exited the vehicle. Edwards was taken into custody a short distance from the vehicle with the assistance of a Ventura Police K9.

Through the course of this pursuit, Edwards committed multiple dangerous traffic violations and was charged with felony evading of a police officer.

Additionally, officers located stolen property from an earlier theft from an unlocked vehicle in Edwards' possession along with a canister of pepper spray - items believed to have been used in the carjacking attempt.

As a result of these findings, Jesse Edwards 29, a Ventura resident was charged with possession of stolen property, including the stolen vehicle and being a convicted felon in possession of pepper spray. Edwards was treated at VCMC for minor injuries resulting from the K9 bite and was later booked in the Ventura County Jail for the above charges. The victims from the carjacking and robbery were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
